Original Habitat
The Mute Swan's original habitat was Northern Europe including the British Isles, Northern Africa, and Asia, shown in the second picture above.
New/Introduced Habitat
Mute Swans were introduced to North America in the late 19th century. They were brought to New England city parks, zoos, and estates because of their aesthetic appeal, but then some of them escaped and their numbers in North America have since skyrocketed. There are also smaller populations in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa.
The swans are extremely flexible because they can thrive in many different habitats: marsh, lakes, rivers, estuaries, parks, wetlands, and ponds.
